2016-2017 Season Schedule

July:

Aladdin, Jr. Summer Theatre Academy 2016

Friday @ 7 p.m. - STA a.m. group

Saturday @ 2 p.m. - STA a.m. group

Saturday @ 7 p.m. - STA p.m. group

Sunday @ 2 p.m. - STA p.m. group

The area’s much anticipated favorite will return to The Columbian Theatre this July during Wamego’s Summer Theatre Academy (STA).  Through this program, The Columbian’s mission is to serve as a resource for local children, ranging from kindergarten to 8th grade, with a desire and passion to learn about theatre art.  STA teaches responsibility, confidence and teamwork, which are all traits that we, as an organization, hope will leave a lasting impression on these young actors and actresses.

This summer, Aladdin will magically escape the Disney Vault as the adventurous animation sweeps through Wamego on its magic carpet ride and finds its new home on the Columbian stage during Summer Theatre Academy.

When this family film was released in the early 90s, it was destined to become a Disney classic with the unforgettable voices of notable actors such as Robin Williams and Jonathan Freeman.

August:

Hoo Haw -  Aug. 12-14, 19-21

Friday & Saturday @ 7:30 p.m. / Sunday @ 2 p.m.

Excellent live music + mediocre comedy delivered by exceptional actors and actresses is the formula to Hoo Haw’s success, according to veteran actor and director of Hoo Haw, Troy Hemphill.  This annual performance has proven to be a town-favorite, year after year!  Each summer, a cast of familiar faces from around Wamego comes together to develop new skits, songs and jokes that keep the audience laughing and clapping from beginning to end!  With a cast that has this much fun performing together, it’s no wonder there’s a full audience during each show! Sponsored by WTC.

September/October:

OZtoberFest Murder Mystery - Sept. 30 & Oct. 1 @ 7:30 p.m.

It’s OZtoberFest! In celebration, The Columbian Theatre presents “The Wizard of Oz.”  The director has cast the best actors; the designers have built the beautiful set, and the costumes are stunning but problems abound!  From raging divas, faulty props, and most shockingly of all…MURDER, this production will prove to be unlike any you’ve ever seen before!  Whodunit?  The Witch? The Lion? Dear Aunt Em? With alternate endings each night, you’re sure to be kept on your toes!  Join us for a fun night as we hunt for clues and (hopefully) solve this exciting, and often hilarious, whodunit based on a treasured musical at the historic Columbian Theatre. Sponsored by Briggs Auto Lane Manhattan.

October:

Sleepy Hollow - Oct. 14-16, 21-23 & 28-30

Friday & Saturday @ 7:30 p.m. / Sunday @ 2 p.m.

In the ghostly and unsettling depths of this little Dutch settlement, residents share ominous legends about witches, haunted powwows and the most infamous tale of all, the Headless Horseman.  New suspicions arise in the secluded glen when the schoolmaster from Connecticut goes missing on his dark and lonesome journey home after failing to secure the wealthy farmer’s daughter’s hand in marriage.  Was the Headless Horseman responsible for the disappearance, or will the blame land on the unruly Brom Bones who was competing for the daughter’s hand?  The eerie truth to this mystery very much awakens the little town of Sleepy Hollow. Sponsored by Steel and Pipe Supply.

December:

A Columbian Family Christmas - Dec. 2-4, 9-11 &16-18

Friday & Saturday @ 7:30 p.m. / Sunday @ 2 p.m.

The hilarious Roger Columbian from last year’s Columbian Christmas presents A Columbian Family Christmas variety show!  Escape the cold, snowy weather and warm up with carols and cocoa.  The whole family will be filled with the Christmas spirit as local soloists and groups perform different acts each week.  Sing along to some of the most beloved Christmas songs, and relax before the guaranteed Christmas chaos ensues.  Got a hard-to-shop for family member on your Christmas list? We’ll take care of it for you! Admit One and Admit Two gift certificates are available all-year-round! Sponsored by Friendship House.

February:

Dueling Pianos - Feb. 4 @ 7:30 p.m.

From classic rock to country and R&B, Tony B. and special guest are back by popular demand for a night full of dancing and sing-along music.  As these two professional pianists go head-to-head on stage, write-in your music requests, and prepare to be carried away to some of the most beloved music eras of all time!  Whether you’re a Bon Jovi junkie or a Sir Mix-a-Lot lover, this is a night to cut loose, and enjoy the company of good friends and great music!

March:

Grand Celtic Music Tour - March 11 @ 7:30

There’s not a better way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day than Celtic music, food and drinks.  This musical event encompasses a large amount of Celtic culture by bringing in booths that showcase Celtic arts & crafts, musical instruments and food.  After a journey through the cultural exhibition in the Swogger Gallery, try specialty samples of whiskies and enjoy an evening full of bagpipes, accordions and so much more!

April/May:

High School Musical - April 21-23, 28-30 & May 5-7

Friday & Saturday @ 7:30 p.m. / Sunday @ 2 p.m.

In this modern day take on Grease, a small-town high school basketball star, Troy Bolten, falls for the breathtakingly beautiful brainiac, Gabriella Montez.  Challenges ensue when the high school couple faces jealous girls, busy schedules, and of course, the high school play auditions!  Will this dynamic couple prove its friends wrong, or will Troy and Gabriella’s love end when the curtain closes? Sponsored by Imagemakers.

June:

Gypsy - June 9-11, 16-18 & 23-25

Friday & Saturday @ 7:30 p.m. / Sunday @ 2 p.m.

After June and Louise’s childhood stardom on the vaudeville circuit thanks to their pushy mother who lives vicariously through their success, the once talented and enthusiastic June decides to step back from show business, contrary to her mother’s wishes.  As the popularity of the vaudeville era fades, Louise, the quiet and reserved sister, lands a surprising role in a racy burlesque show set in Wichita, Kansas.  When the lead burlesque dancer is arrested, Louise drops her shyness, along with a shoulder strap and begins her transformation from shy, little Louise, to the sexy and sophisticated “Gypsy Rose Lee.”  Sponsored by Bank of the Flint Hills.
